TRAVEL TIPS

Safety

Toronto is renowned as a safe city, but you should still be careful with your valuables—keep them in a hotel safe when you're not wearing them. Downtown areas are generally safe at night, even for women alone. Most of the seedier parts of the city are on its fringes. Nevertheless, areas east of Dufferin on Queen Street, College, or Bloor can feel desolate after dark as can most of Dundas Street, though a few pioneer hipster bars are popping up in these areas.

Panhandling happens in Toronto, especially in Queen West and Kensington Market. Jaywalking isn’t illegal in Toronto and it happens frequently. Be alert when driving or walking—streetcars, jaywalkers, and plentiful bicyclists make downtown navigation somewhat hazardous.

Distribute your cash, credit cards, IDs, and other valuables between a deep front pocket, an inside jacket or vest pocket, and a hidden money pouch. Don't reach for the money pouch once you're in public.
